Phase 1, Post 1: Identity, Diversity, and Technology

The definition of diversity has multiple meanings. Diverse can mean different and can imply a variation. Often times when thinking of the word it is immediately associated with race or culture from the phrase "diverse background". People correlate their race, culture, religion, and other things about them as part of their identity. These are things that define who we are and because we are all different our identity is in itself diverse.

As our identity is diverse, so is technology. The different innovations and inventions that have developed throughout time and history shows improvement. This change has shown how the technology world has evolved and become "a practical application of science" (Sayers). Technology has reached many of diverse and different backgrounds. It is a worldwide tool used in most people's everyday lives. As it has spread throughout the world it has affected many lives and therefore identities. Our identities are made up of the things that surround us and how we use, act, and react towards them. Therefore, technology molds us into the type of people we are. A large part of technology is social media and the way we behave and act on it is what makes up an image. It may not be a "true" image but it is as Kaplan describes as a "social identity". A social identity and a personal identity differentiate based upon use of technology.

Although the three interchange and can be fitted into one another, they are also individual. Each has its own meaning. Identity is who we are, we may be similar to one another and sometimes our identity is based off of the people we are surrounded by so it may not be unique or diverse. Diversity is relevant in essentially all aspects; however, it is disregarded from time to time, especially in tech. The lack of diversity in tech can relate to gender, religion, culture, race, etc, but there is almost always a lack of it in some aspect. Technology is a broad word. It can be the actual physical devices or it could refer to the concept of it. Regardless, it is a large part of the way we carry ourselves and how it affects the entire world.
